Geospatial Technologies Advanced Workshop Checklist

By CAST

Center for Advanced Spatial Technologies

The purpose of this checklist is to ensure that your students are prepared to come to the Advanced GIS Training Workshop. Although we don't expect all students to be at the exact same skill level to attend training, we have found out that if students do not have at least a general understanding of how to use the software then the whole class is put at a disadvantage. We have tried to make this checklist as short and as painless as possible. Please sit down with each student that will be attending and have him/her demonstrate how to answer the questions below. If the student has a hard time demonstrating the skills then they may not be ready to attend this training. If they have trouble with one or two then get them to figure the answers out and come back to you.

What do the students need to answer the questions? They need ArcGIS installed on the computer as well as GIS data. If the students are coming to Advanced training then they should already have some type of GIS data that they have been using.

Thank You

  1. Have the student show you how to add data into ArcMap. ex. roads, streams, etc.
  2. Now ask the student to label the features from the data that was just added.
  3. Next, have the student show you how many records there are of the features in the data that was just added? hint: they will need to go to the attribute table to find this information
  4. Get the student to demonstrate how to do a “select by attribute” on a feature in the map. ex. find all road features named “main st.”
  5. Have them print out the map that they just created with a title, north arrow, and scale bar.
  6. Please have them bring this to the Advanced GIS Training so that we can see they have completed the exercise.
